Archival Overview
Physician and master short-story writer whose compassionate stories ('From Spring to Spring', 'Hanka') immortalized the Sephardic Jewish community and poor multi-ethnic neighborhoods of Sarajevo.
Biographical Record
Isak Samokovlija was born on September 3, 1889, in Goražde into a Sephardic Jewish family whose ancestors had settled in Bosnia after fleeing the Spanish expulsion. Graduating in medicine from the University of Vienna, Dr. Samokovlija practiced medicine across rural Bosnian towns and at Koševo Hospital in Sarajevo.
Surviving the Holocaust in hiding, Samokovlija authored deeply empathetic stories focusing on poor Jewish porters, tinsmiths, water-carriers, and merchants in Sarajevo's Bjelave mahalas. Masterpieces such as Hanka and Nosač Samuel (Samuel the Porter) revealed the rich Ladino-Bosnian culture. He served as President of the Writers' Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina after World War II.
