Archival Overview
Legendary Chief Justice (Qadi) of Kairouan under the Aghlabids, immortalized in North African legal history for extreme personal austerity, refusal of gifts, and defending the poor against royal princes.
Biographical Record
Isa ibn Miskin studied in Kairouan under Imam Sahnun and traveled to Egypt and the Hijaz. Appointed chief judge by Aghlabid Emir Ibrahim II, Isa accepted only on condition that he could judge princes and peasants with absolute equality without royal interference.
He refused any salary from the royal treasury, living solely on the modest produce of his small family olive grove. In court, he famously required royal plaintiffs to stand side-by-side with impoverished commoners, becoming North Africa's immortal symbol of judicial rectitude.
