Archival Overview

First Emir of Bahrain from 1961 to 1999 who led Bahrain to full independence from Great Britain in 1971, built the King Fahd Causeway, and transformed Bahrain into the financial capital of the Gulf.

Biographical Record

Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa was born on June 3, 1933, in Jasra. Ascending the throne in 1961 upon the death of his father Shaikh Salman, he navigated Bahrain through turbulent regional transformations, decisively achieving full sovereign independence on August 15, 1971, following a UN survey confirming the Bahraini people's desire for independence rather than annexation by Iran.

Emir Isa diversified Bahrain's economy beyond depleting oil reserves, establishing the nation as the Persian Gulf's premier international offshore banking and financial center. In 1986, he inaugurated the 25-kilometer King Fahd Causeway connecting Bahrain to Saudi Arabia. Revered for his accessibility and modesty, he regularly held open majlis meetings for ordinary citizens until his sudden death in 1999.
