Archival Overview
First French-Canadian female physician whose visionary dedication to pediatric medicine founded Montreal's Sainte-Justine Hospital and Quebec City's Enfant-Jésus Hospital.
Biographical Record
Irma LeVasseur was an exceptional pioneer of Canadian medicine. Barred from Quebec medical schools because of her sex, she earned her medical doctorate at the University of Minnesota in 1900. Returning to Quebec, she lobbied the provincial legislature successfully to pass a special act in 1903 allowing her to practice medicine in her home province.
Devoting her life to reducing catastrophic infant mortality rates, LeVasseur co-founded Hôpital Sainte-Justine in Montreal in 1907 with Justine Lacoste-Beaubien, and later co-founded Hôpital de l'Enfant-Jésus in Quebec City in 1923, leaving an indelible legacy of pediatric healing across Canada.
