Archival Overview
Powerful Arab commander of the military garrison (Jund) of Tunis who rebelled against Abbasid central control, asserting regional autonomy for northern Tunisia in the late 8th century.
Biographical Record
Imran ibn Mujalid was the preeminent leader of the Arab military aristocracy stationed in Tunis during the tumultuous final decades of direct Abbasid rule. Discontented with fiscal extractions sent to Baghdad, Imran mobilized the regiments of Tunis, Béja, and Tabarka.
His military resistance forced Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid to recognize that direct rule from Iraq was unsustainable, paving the way for the institutionalization of the autonomous Aghlabid Emirate.
