Archival Overview

Venerated as the "Imam of the Abode of Emigration" (Medina). Compiled the Muwatta—humanity's earliest extant Islamic legal and Hadith corpus—and founded the Maliki school based on the living communal practice (Amal) of Medina.

Biographical Record

Malik lived his entire life in holy Medina, studying under scholars of the generation of the Prophet's companions. Renowned for supreme reverence for sacred knowledge, he would bathe and perfume himself before narrating hadith, refusing to ride a horse in Medina out of respect for the soil where the Prophet walked.

His Al-Muwatta harmonized prophetic traditions with the continuous civic practice of Medina. Enduring public flogging rather than compromise judicial rulings on divorce under duress, he was interred in historic Al-Baqi.
