Archival Overview

Sanhaja Berber Sufi master who authored 'Dala'il al-Khayrat', the most celebrated prayer book in Islamic history, and mobilized national resistance against Portuguese coastal incursions in Morocco.

Biographical Record

Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Jazuli (c. 1404–1465) belonged to the Sanhaja Berber Jazula tribe of the Souss. After studying at the Madrasat al-Saffarin in Fez and spending forty years in spiritual retreat, he was initiated into the Shadhiliyya order, founding the الجزولية Jazuliyya branch.

Al-Jazuli composed Dala'il al-Khayrat wa Shawariq al-Anwar (Waymarks of Benefits and the Brilliant Burst of Lights), a sublime collection of prayers upon the Prophet Muhammad that was copied in millions of illuminated manuscripts across West Africa, Turkey, India, and China. When Portuguese fleets captured Moroccan coastal ports, Al-Jazuli mobilized 12,000 armed disciples to defend the nation.
