Archival Overview
Soviet theoretical physicist who co-developed the electrodynamic theory of Cherenkov radiation and co-invented the Tokamak magnetic fusion confinement system with Andrei Sakharov.
Biographical Record
Igor Tamm (1895–1971) worked at Moscow State University and the Lebedev Physical Institute. In 1937, he and Ilya Frank provided the relativistic mathematical formulation explaining how particles traversing a medium faster than light create optical shock waves, winning the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics.
In 1950, Tamm and his protege Andrei Sakharov conceived the Tokamak—a toroidal magnetic chamber designed to contain ultra-hot plasma for thermonuclear fusion, which remains the cornerstone of modern fusion reactor design worldwide.
Key Life Milestones
Electrodynamics of Cherenkov Effect
Published the classical electromagnetic equation describing Cherenkov radiation with Ilya Frank.
Invention of the Tokamak Concept
Proposed toroidal magnetic plasma confinement with Andrei Sakharov, founding modern fusion energy research.
