Biographical Record

Ignacy Lukasiewicz (1822–1882) graduated in pharmacy from Vienna. Experimenting with Galician crude oil seepage in Lwow, he devised a fractional distillation method to extract clean-burning kerosene, illuminating a local hospital emergency surgery with his new lamp in 1853.

In 1854, he dug the world's first operational commercial rock oil well in Bobrka and opened the first refinery in Ulaszowice in 1856. A passionate philanthropist, he used his petroleum fortune to build schools, roads, and hospitals for Galician peasants.
