Archival Overview

Posthumous son of Idris I who assumed sovereignty at age eleven, founded the imperial capital city of Fez in 808 CE, and consolidated the administrative, judicial, and cultural institutions of Morocco.

Biographical Record

Idris II (791–828 CE) was born two months after his father's assassination and raised under the guardianship of his mother Kenza (daughter of the Awraba chieftain) and regent Rashid. An exceptionally gifted youth, he mastered Islamic jurisprudence, Quranic sciences, and martial arts, taking personal command of the state in 803 CE.

In 808 CE, Idris II founded the imperial city of Fez on the banks of the Jawhar river. He divided Fez into two vibrant quarters: the Adwat al-Andalusiyyin (welcoming Arab families exiled from Cordoba) and the Adwat al-Qarawiyyin (welcoming families from Kairouan). This synthesis of Andalusian and Maghrebi craftsmanship and scholarship transformed Fez into the cultural capital of North Africa.
