Great-grandson of Prophet Muhammad through Ali and Fatima, who fled Abbasid persecution, was welcomed by the Awraba Berbers at Volubilis, and founded the Idrisid Dynasty, establishing the first sovereign Moroccan Islamic state.
Biographical Record
Moulay Idris ibn Abdallah (c. 745–791 CE) survived the massacre of his family at the Battle of Fakhkh near Mecca in 786 CE. Escaping west across North Africa with his loyal companion Rashid, he found refuge in 788 CE at the ancient Roman city of Walila (Volubilis) in northern Morocco.
The chieftain of the Awraba Berber tribe, Ishaq ibn Muhammad, swore fealty (bay'ah) to Idris as Imam and Sultan. Idris unified Arab and Amazigh tribes, instituted Islamic governance, and expanded his state across Tamesna, Fazaz, and Tlemcen. Alarmed by his growing power, Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid dispatched a secret assassin who poisoned Idris in 791 CE.
