Renowned Mai (Emperor) of the Kanem-Bornu Empire who modernized his army with Ottoman firearms, camel cavalry, and established legal and administrative reforms based on Islamic law.

Biographical Record

Mai Idris Alooma (c. 1571–1603) ascended the throne of Kanem-Bornu at its capital, Birni Gazargamu. He opened diplomatic relations with Ottoman Sultan Murad III, securing Turkish military instructors and modern muskets, creating Sub-Saharan Africa's first firearm-equipped standing army.

Alooma reunited the historic territories of Kanem and Bornu across modern Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon, built brick mosques and courts of justice, and instituted standardized weights and measures. His reign was chronicled in detail by his grand imam, Ahmad ibn Furtu.
