Archival Overview

Eldest son of Muhammad Ali and Egypt's greatest military commander of the modern era, who created the modern Egyptian conscript army and conquered Syria, marching to the gates of Istanbul.

Biographical Record

Appointed commander-in-chief of the newly modernized Egyptian army, Ibrahim Pasha subdued the Wahhabi rebellion in Arabia in 1818, commanded Egyptian forces in the Greek War of Independence, and conquered the Levant in 1831–1832.

At the Battle of Konya in 1832, he completely annihilated the main Ottoman imperial army, opening the road to Constantinople before European powers intervened. A brilliant agricultural and administrative reformer, he briefly succeeded his father as Wali of Egypt before his death in 1848.
