Ibrahim II ascended the emirate of Kairouan in 875, inaugurating a period of intense architectural and administrative activity. He constructed the new palatial capital of Raqqada south of Kairouan, famous for its magnificent water basins and porcelain workshops.
Under his reign, Aghlabid naval forces captured Syracuse in 878. Abdicating the throne in 902 to seek redemption as a simple holy warrior, he personally crossed to Sicily, captured the final Byzantine stronghold of Taormina, and died campaigning in Calabria.
