Biographical Record
Ibrahim Aslan was born in the Nile Delta and grew up in the impoverished working-class neighborhood of Imbaba in Cairo. Self-educated, he worked as a postal and telecommunications clerk for decades, writing spare, evocative short stories about common Egyptian street life.
In 1983, Aslan published his masterpiece 'The Heron' (Malik al-Hazin), capturing the communal solidarity, humor, and despair of Imbaba on the eve of the 1977 bread riots. In 1991, director Daoud Abdel Sayed adapted the novel into 'Kit Kat' starring Mahmoud Abdel Aziz as blind Sheikh Hosni, creating one of modern Arab cinema's greatest box-office and critical classics.
