Biographical Record
Ibrahim al-Yaziji, son of the linguist Nasif al-Yaziji, was born in Beirut and inherited his father's passionate dedication to Arabic philology. Collaborating with Jesuit scholars, he completed a masterly new translation of the Catholic Bible into elegant modern Arabic that became a model of prose clarity.
Yaziji made major contributions to modern Arabic printing by designing a simplified Arabic typographical font that reduced hundreds of complex letter forms to basic character sets, revolutionizing newspapers and book publishing. Moving to Cairo, he edited the intellectual periodicals Al-Bayan and Al-Diya, mentoring the generation that led the Arab national awakening.
