Distinguished Grand Imam of Al-Azhar from 1847 to 1860 whose encyclopedic theological and legal glosses, including Tuhfat al-Murid and Hashiyat al-Bajuri, served as the definitive textbooks across the Muslim world.
Biographical Record
Born in the Nile Delta, Burhan al-Din Ibrahim al-Bajuri entered Al-Azhar in youth, mastering logic, rhetoric, astronomy, and Shafi'i jurisprudence. Appointed Grand Imam in 1847 by Ibrahim Pasha, his 13-year rectorship modernized institutional administration and curriculum standards.
His theological treatise Tuhfat al-Murid ala Jawharat al-Tawhid remains the standard classical manual of rationalist Ash'ari theology from Egypt to Indonesia. He was renowned for protecting students from imperial conscription and defending intellectual freedom at Al-Azhar.
