Archival Overview

Pioneering 10th-century agronomist and alchemist whose 'Nabataean Agriculture' preserved ancient Mesopotamian farming wisdom.

Biographical Record

Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Wahshiyya al-Kasdani was born in Qusayn near Kufa into an ancient indigenous Aramean-Nabataean family. Deeply proud of the ancient pre-Islamic Mesopotamian civilization, he translated ancient Nabataean texts into Arabic, seeking to demonstrate the agricultural and scientific achievements of the Chaldeans and Babylonians.

His celebrated masterpiece, Kitab al-Filaha al-Nabatiyya (The Nabataean Agriculture), is an astonishing encyclopedic manual on soil science, crop rotation, irrigation, meteorology, and botany, praised by modern scholars as the most important agricultural text of the Middle Ages. He also authored Kitab Shawq al-Mustaham, correctly deciphering several Egyptian hieroglyphic phonetic values centuries before Champollion.
