Biographical Record
Yusuf ibn Taghribirdi (1410–1470) was the son of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mamluk armies under Sultan Faraj ibn Barquq. Raised in the royal Citadel of Cairo, he possessed unique insider access to state documents, military archives, and court politics, studying history under Al-Maqrizi and hadith under Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani.
His crowning historical monument is Al-Nujum al-Zahirah fi Muluk Misr wal-Qahirah (The Brilliant Stars Among the Kings of Egypt and Cairo), an exhaustive chronicle detailing the reigns of every governor, sultan, and vizier of Egypt across eight centuries, including yearly records of the Nile flood levels, commodity prices, and obituaries of prominent scholars and emirs.
