Archival Overview
Celebrated poet and literary theorist of Kairouan whose legendary intellectual rivalry with Ibn Rashiq produced some of the sharpest critical works in classical Arabic literature.
Biographical Record
Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Sharaf was, alongside Ibn Rashiq, the twin literary pillar of the 11th-century Zirid court in Kairouan. Renowned for his sharp wit and epigrammatic elegance, he composed Rasa'il al-Intiqad (The Letters of Criticism), which pioneered comparative literary judgment.
Following the catastrophic Hilalian incursions into Ifriqiya, he sought refuge across the sea in Al-Andalus, serving at the Taifa courts of Seville and Almería where his North African verses were hailed with distinction.
