Biographical Record
Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Rashiq studied in Kairouan under the patronage of Zirid Emir Al-Mu'izz ibn Badis, rising to become the court's most brilliant literary mind. His theoretical treatises synthesized centuries of poetic theory.
His magnum opus, Al-Umda fi Mahasin al-Shi'r wa Adabihi wa Naqdihi (The Pillar on the Beauties of Poetry, Its Etiquette, and Criticism), remains the most influential encyclopedia of literary criticism in Arabic history. When Kairouan was sacked by the Banu Hilal in 1057, he fled into exile to Sicily.
