Ismail ibn Umar Ibn Kathir (c. 1301–1373 CE) studied under Ibn Taymiyyah and al-Dhahabi, becoming professor of Hadith at the prestigious Ashrafiyya school in Damascus.
His Tafsir pioneered the method of interpreting the Quran through the Quran itself and authentic traditions, while his 14-volume Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah chronicled history from creation to the Last Day.
