Biographical Record

Born in Moorish Murcia in Al-Andalus, Ibn Arabi demonstrated precocious mystical insight as a youth in Seville and Córdoba, meeting the aged philosopher Averroes. Undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca in 1201, he experienced visionary encounters that catalyzed his colossal encyclopedic work Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyya.

Settling in Damascus under the patronage of the Ayyubid ruler, he authored Fusus al-Hikam (The Bezels of Wisdom), elucidating how divine attributes are uniquely channeled through each prophetic consciousness, his shrine on Mount Qasiyun remaining a global sanctuary of contemplation.
