"The true physician treats the poor without demanding silver, for the preservation of human life is a divine duty."

Archival Overview

Pioneering 10th-century North African physician from Kairouan who authored 'Zad al-Musafir' (The Traveler's Provision), which became the premier medical handbook of medieval Europe under the title 'Viaticum Peregrinantis'.

Biographical Record

Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn al-Jazzar (898–980 CE) belonged to an illustrious medical family in Kairouan. Rejecting the ostentatious wealth of royal court physicians, Ibn al-Jazzar dedicated his life to treating poor patients in his clinic in Kairouan, accumulating an immense library of rare manuscripts.

His masterwork Zad al-Musafir (Provisions for the Traveler) was translated into Latin by Constantine the African at the medical school of Salerno as the Viaticum, serving as a core medical textbook across medieval European universities for five hundred years. He authored history's first standalone medical treatise on pediatrics and child healthcare (Siyasat al-Sibyan) and a groundbreaking treatise on the care of the elderly.
