Archival Overview
Eminent Fez-born Maliki jurist and theological scholar whose monumental work Al-Madkhal provides one of the richest records of medieval social customs, education, and religious practice in Morocco and Egypt.
Biographical Record
Abu Abdallah Ibn al-Hajj al-Abdari was raised and educated in the scholarly institutions of Fez before embarking on pilgrimage and teaching across North Africa. A devout follower of Abu Imran al-Fasi's reformist lineage, he authored Al-Madkhal ila Tanmiyat al-A'mal bi-Tahsin al-Niyyat (The Introduction to the Development of Actions by Purifying Intentions).
His book remains celebrated not only as a vigorous defense of orthodox Maliki ethics but as an invaluable primary sociological document detailing the everyday commercial guilds, domestic customs, medical practices, and urban festivals of 13th- and 14th-century Moroccan society.
