Biographical Record
Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Uthman al-Azdi, known as Ibn al-Banna (1256–1321), was the son of an architect in Marrakech. He studied geometry, algebra, and astronomy in Fez and Marrakech, receiving patronage from Marinid Sultan Abu Said Othman II.
Ibn al-Banna authored over eighty treatises, foremost among them Talkhis A'mal al-Hisab (Summary of Mathematical Operations). He pioneered continued fractions, figured numbers, and permutation-combination formulas pre-dating Blaise Pascal. He also designed astronomical astrolabes and water clocks for the grand mosques of Morocco. The lunar crater 'Al-Marrakushi' was named in his honor by the International Astronomical Union.
