Archival Overview

14th-century Moroccan chronicler whose work Rawd al-Qirtas is the foundational historical narrative for the Idrisid, Almoravid, Almohad, and Marinid dynasties and the city of Fez.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Abi Zar lived in the imperial Marinid capital of Fez during its medieval zenith. Commissioned by Sultan Abu Sa'id Uthman II, he undertook the ambitious task of compiling the collective memory of the Moroccan kingdom.

His master chronicle, Al-Anis al-Mutrib bi-Rawd al-Qirtas fi Akhbar Muluk al-Maghrib wa Tarikh Madinat Fas (The Entertaining Companion in the Gardens of Paper), remains the primary literary source for early Moroccan dynastic history and urban traditions.
