"Art is a prayer of colors; when the line is honest and the heart is pure, painting becomes divine music."

Archival Overview

Master painter, art critic, and musical virtuoso whose lyrical paintings of Nubian peasants, poetic magazine illustrations in Akhbar El Yom, and children's magazine Sindbad shaped Egyptian visual culture.

Biographical Record

Born in the Anfoushi district of Alexandria, Hussein Bicar graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1933, trained under Ahmed Sabry. He combined exquisite draftsmanship, lyrical Nubian color palettes, and delicate geometric forms with deep spiritual humanism.

As art critic for Akhbar El Yom and founding artistic director of the iconic children's magazine Sindbad in 1952, he introduced millions of Arab youths to visual storytelling. An accomplished master of the classical oud, his weekly painted verses became national treasures, honored with the State Merit Prize in Arts in 2000.
