Archival Overview
First King of the Franks of the House of Capet, elected in 987, who founded the Capetian dynasty that governed France through direct and cadet lines for over eight centuries.
Biographical Record
Duke of the Franks and son of Hugh the Great, Capet held vast lands between the Seine and Loire. In May 987, following the death of Louis V, the assembly of Frankish nobles at Senlis, guided by Archbishop Adalberon of Reims, elected Capet King of the Franks.
He immediately secured royal continuity by crowning his son Robert II the Pious as co-ruler at Orléans on Christmas Day 987, establishing the unbroken Capetian hereditary succession that transformed a fragile feudal realm into the French kingdom.
