Biographical Record
Daughter of Sultan Pasha, President of Egypt's Chamber of Deputies, Huda Sha'arawi broke from the secluded harem culture of the late Ottoman era. During the 1919 Revolution, she organized the historic women's march against British occupation forces.
In 1923, returning from the International Woman Suffrage Alliance congress in Rome, she and Saiza Nabarawi removed their face veils on the train platform in Cairo. She campaigned successfully for raising the legal marriage age for girls and expanding university education for women.
