Archival Overview
Brilliant, radical Quebec novelist whose revolutionary spy thriller Prochain Épisode (1965)—written while detained in a psychiatric prison for separatist militancy—revolutionized post-modern literature.
Biographical Record
Educated at the Université de Montréal and Sciences Po in Paris, Aquin was an active militant in the separatist Rassemblement pour l'indépendance nationale (RIN). In 1964, arrested with a stolen revolver, he was placed in a psychiatric hospital where he composed Prochain Épisode.
The novel became an immediate international sensation, weaving dazzling wordplay, espionage, and political allegory to depict Quebec's historical paralysis. Refusing the Governor General's Award on political principle, Aquin took his own life on the grounds of Montreal's Collège Villa Maria in 1977.
