Archival Overview
Revered as the 'All-Armenian Poet', whose ballads, folk adaptations (such as 'Anoush'), and children's tales shaped modern Armenian national identity and ethical humanitarianism.
Biographical Record
Hovhannes Tumanyan was born on February 19, 1869, in the picturesque mountain village of Dsegh in Lori. Establishing himself in Tiflis, Tumanyan formed the legendary literary circle Vernatun ('The Attic') in 1899, gathering leading writers including Isahakyan, Shant, and Aghayan.
Tumanyan's epic poems and ballads—such as Anoush, The Capture of Tmkabert, and David of Sassoun—captured the timeless spirit and folklore of the Armenian highlands. In 1915, during the genocide, he traveled tirelessly to Vagharshapat, organizing relief camps and shelters for tens of thousands of orphan refugees, earning boundless national devotion.
