Archival Overview
Legendary Moroccan troubadour and modern folk music pioneer whose witty social satires and hits like 'Dakhelkan' immortalized the impact of World War II and American troops in Morocco.
Biographical Record
Born Houcine Ben Mbarek in Salé, he began his career performing in village souks and urban halka storytelling circles. Armed only with his oud and acute observational wit, he documented the social upheavals of 1940s Morocco under colonial rule.
His iconic song Dakhelkan satirized the arrival of American forces during Operation Torch in 1942, featuring linguistic blending of Moroccan Darija and American slang. Passing away from tuberculosis at just 30, his compositions formed the bedrock of modern Moroccan song.
