Archival Overview

Commanding Algerian statesman and military strategist who served as Chief of Staff of the ALN, Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, and President of Algeria (1965–1978), championing industrialization, nationalization of hydrocarbons, and Third World non-alignment.

Biographical Record

Born Mohamed Boukharouba in Guelma, Houari Boumédiène studied at Al-Zaytouna in Tunis and Al-Azhar in Cairo before joining the ALN in Wilaya V (Oranie). Rising to supreme commander of the General Staff of the ALN (EMG) on the borders, he built a disciplined, heavily equipped modern army that guaranteed the triumph of the revolution.

Assuming the presidency in 1965, Boumédiène transformed Algeria into a modern socialist industrial powerhouse, famously nationalizing French oil and gas fields on February 24, 1971. At the 1973 Non-Aligned Summit in Algiers and the 1974 UN General Assembly, he commanded global acclaim by demanding a 'New International Economic Order' that ended Western exploitation of the Global South.
