Biographical Record

Homi Jehangir Bhabha (1909–1966) conducted foundational research in cosmic radiation and quantum electrodynamics at Cambridge, deriving the mathematical expression for electron-positron scattering known as Bhabha scattering. Returning to India, he convinced industrialist J.R.D. Tata to fund the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

As chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, Bhabha designed an ingenious three-stage nuclear program focused on utilizing India's abundant domestic thorium reserves to achieve energy self-reliance, before perishing tragically in an airplane accident in 1966.
