Karl Hjalmar Branting

Karl Hjalmar Branting was born in Stockholm, the son of a professor of gymnastics and medicine. Educated in mathematical astronomy at Uppsala University, Branting abandoned his scientific career to enter radical journalism, editing Tiden and Social-Demokraten. In 1889, Branting co-founded the Swedish Social Democratic Party, becoming its first member elected to the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) in 1896, where he sat as the solitary socialist voice among 230 members.

In 1905, when Norway declared the dissolution of its union with Sweden and Swedish conservatives threatened military invasion, Branting courageously mobilized the working class against war under the slogan 'Hands off Norway!', securing a peaceful separation. In 1920, Branting became the first democratically elected Social Democratic Prime Minister in Europe.

On the world stage, Branting placed his faith in the League of Nations. In 1920, when a dangerous sovereignty dispute erupted between Sweden and newly independent Finland over the Åland Islands, Branting agreed to submit the issue to the League of Nations. When the League ruled against Sweden and awarded sovereignty to Finland (while guaranteeing cultural autonomy), Branting accepted the ruling unconditionally, setting a historic precedent for peaceful dispute resolution. Awarded the 1921 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Christian Lous Lange, Branting played a leading role on the League Council until his death in 1925.
