Biographical Record
Hipparchus of Nicaea (c. 190–120 BCE) conducted decades of meticulous astronomical observations from the island of Rhodes. Comparing his celestial coordinates with observations made 150 years earlier by Timocharis, he discovered the slow wobble of the Earth's rotational axis—the precession of the equinoxes.
He compiled a star catalog of at least 850 stars, inventing the system of apparent stellar magnitudes (ranking brightness from 1st to 6th magnitude) still used today. To solve planetary calculations, he constructed the first table of trigonometric chords, making him the recognized father of trigonometry.
