Archival Overview
Two-time President of Argentina and leader of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), who was the first president elected under universal male suffrage (Saenz Pena Law), founding YPF and universal social reform.
Biographical Record
A reclusive and ascetic lawyer, Hipolito Yrigoyen (1852–1933) spent decades organizing boycotts and armed uprisings against corrupt oligarchic election fraud. In 1912, the Saenz Pena Law established secret, compulsory universal male suffrage, leading to Yrigoyen's landslide presidential victory in 1916.
Yrigoyen governed with personal austerity, living in a modest rented house. He maintained strict Argentine neutrality during World War I, mediated labor disputes, defended university autonomy during the 1918 Cordoba Reform, and founded YPF, the world's first vertically integrated state oil company. Overthrown in the 1930 coup, his funeral drew over 200,000 citizens.
