Archival Overview

Daring 5th-century BCE Carthaginian explorer and naval commander who led the first recorded maritime voyage into the Atlantic Ocean along the coasts of Portugal, Brittany, and Britain.

Biographical Record

Commissioned by the Senate of Carthage alongside Hanno the Navigator (who sailed south), Himilco sailed past the Pillars of Hercules (Strait of Gibraltar) heading northward into the uncharted Atlantic Ocean around 450 BCE.

His expedition reached the tin-rich Oestrimnides islands (Brittany and Cornwall) and the coasts of Ireland, establishing the Punic maritime tin trade. His naval logbook, preserving observations of seaweed shallows (Sargasso Sea) and ocean fogs, was cited in Roman poet Rufus Festus Avienus's *Ora Maritima*.
