Archival Overview
Carthaginian explorer and sea captain who conducted the first recorded maritime voyage by a Mediterranean navigator along the northwestern shores of Europe to Britain and Ireland.
Biographical Record
Contemporary with Hanno the Navigator, Himilco was commissioned by the Carthaginian Senate to explore the northern Atlantic sea routes. Passing the Pillars of Hercules, he steered north along the Iberian peninsula, the Bay of Biscay, and the coast of Brittany.
Himilco reached the 'Oestrymnides' islands (Brittany and Cornwall) and recorded the 'Holy Island' (Ireland) and Albion (Britain), establishing trade routes for the prized tin mines needed for bronze manufacturing. His descriptions of weed-choked seas and becalmed waters were preserved in Avienus's classical Latin poem 'Ora Maritima'.
