Hillel the Elder (c. 110 BCE – 10 CE) migrated from Babylon to Jerusalem to study under Shemaya and Avtalyon, rising to become Prince (Nasi) of the Sanhedrin.

Famous for his patience and compassion, he summarized the entire Torah while standing on one foot: 'That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow; that is the whole Torah, the rest is commentary.'
