Archival Overview
Numidian King who allied with the Roman Marian faction against Sulla, ruling Numidia until defeated and captured by young general Pompey the Great in 81 BCE.
Biographical Record
Hiarbas seized the Numidian throne during the Roman civil wars between Marius and Sulla, overthrowing the pro-Sullan king Hiempsal II. Aligning himself with Marian leader Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, Hiarbas commanded a powerful Berber army opposing Sullan hegemony in Africa.
In 81 BCE, Sulla dispatched twenty-four-year-old Pompey the Great with six legions to Africa. Pompey routed the allied forces at Utica and pursued Hiarbas to Bulla Regia, capturing and executing him, an exploit for which Pompey celebrated his first Roman triumph.
