Archival Overview
Brilliant 1st-century Greco-Egyptian engineer and geometer in Roman Alexandria who invented the aeolipile (the world's first steam turbine), the windwheel, automatic vending machines, and programmable theater robots.
Biographical Record
Heron taught geometry, physics, and pneumatics at the Mouseion of Alexandria. A practical mechanical genius, he authored revolutionary technical manuals including *Pneumatica*, *Automata*, and *Mechanica*, outlining devices that utilized steam pressure, air displacement, and counterweights.
His *aeolipile* was the earliest recorded steam turbine in human history, consisting of a water sphere that rotated rapidly when heated by fire. He also designed the world's first coin-operated dispensing machine (holy water dispenser), a water organ, and formulated *Heron's formula* for calculating triangle areas from side lengths.
