Archival Overview

Brilliant Greco-Egyptian engineer and geometer who invented the aeolipile (the world's first steam engine), automatic temple doors, programmable theater automata, and Heron's formula.

Biographical Record

Heron of Alexandria (c. 10–75 CE) was a visionary engineer and applied mathematician at the Musaeum of Alexandria. In his treatise Pneumatica, he described the aeolipile—a radial steam turbine that rotated when steam escaped through opposing nozzles, pioneering steam power seventeen centuries before the Industrial Revolution.

He built the world's first vending machine (dispensing holy water for a coin), hydraulic organ systems, automatic temple doors activated by altar fires, and programmable mechanical theater plays driven by ropes and pulleys. In geometry, his famous Heron's Formula calculates the area of any triangle from its three side lengths.

Key Life Milestones

c. 60 CE

Invention of the Aeolipile (Steam Engine)

Constructed the first working reaction steam engine, demonstrating the conversion of heat into mechanical motion.

c. 65 CE

Publication of 'Metrica' and Heron's Formula

Proved the geometric formula for calculating triangular areas and formulated iterative algorithms for square roots.
