Hermann Minkowski (1864–1909) taught Albert Einstein at ETH Zurich before accepting a chair created for him at Gottingen. In 1907, Minkowski realized that Einstein's special theory of relativity could be expressed with magnificent geometric elegance as a unified four-dimensional non-Euclidean spacetime.

His famous address 'Space and Time' in 1908 declared that space and time are doomed to fade away into mere shadows. In pure mathematics, Minkowski founded the geometry of numbers, using convex bodies to solve fundamental diophantine problems.
