Archival Overview
Pioneering Belgian architect, interior designer, and theorist who co-founded Art Nouveau, founded the Weimar Grand-Ducal School of Arts and Crafts (precursor to the Bauhaus), and designed Ghent's iconic 'Boekentoren'.
Biographical Record
Beginning as a neo-impressionist painter with Les XX, Van de Velde turned to decorative arts inspired by William Morris. In 1895, he designed his own total-work-of-art home Bloemenwerf in Uccle, designing everything from the architecture and furniture to the door handles and his wife's dresses.
Invited to Germany, he founded the Weimar School of Arts and Crafts in 1907, famously appointing Walter Gropius as his successor to create the Bauhaus. Returning to Belgium, he founded La Cambre school of visual arts in Brussels and designed the monumental concrete University Library tower (Boekentoren) in Ghent.
