Biographical Record
Henrik Pontoppidan was born on July 24, 1857, in Fredericia into a prominent lineage of Lutheran pastors. Rejecting the pulpit, he studied engineering at the Polytechnic Institute before dedicating his life to creating an uncompromising literary chronicle of Danish society.
Pontoppidan authored three monumental cycles: Det forjættede Land (The Promised Land, 1891–1895), Lykke-Per (Lucky Per, 1898–1904), and De Dødes Rige (The Realm of the Dead, 1912–1916). Lykke-Per, depicting an ambitious young engineer who seeks self-realization only to find peace in ascetic solitude, is universally recognized as one of the supreme pinnacles of European realist fiction.
