Archival Overview
Legendary violin virtuoso and composer from Verviers whose seven monumental violin concertos and dazzling international concert tours established the global supremacy of the Franco-Belgian Violin School.
Biographical Record
Trained under Charles Auguste de Bériot in Brussels and Paris, Vieuxtemps made his debut in Vienna at age fourteen, where Robert Schumann compared his playing to Niccolò Paganini. He toured relentlessly across Europe, Russia, and the United States, performing before packed concert halls.
Serving as court violinist to Tsar Nicholas I in Saint Petersburg (1846–1851), he laid the foundation for the Russian violin school. In 1871, he was appointed professor of violin at the Brussels Conservatory, training Eugène Ysaÿe. His Violin Concerto No. 5 in A minor remains a cornerstone of the virtuoso repertoire.
