Archival Overview
Enigmatic Belgian-born French poet and painter who explored the inner labyrinth of the human subconscious in Un barbare en Asie, created the absurdist character Plume, and pioneered psychological mescaline drawings.
Biographical Record
Raised in Brussels, Michaux sailed as an ocean stoker before moving to Paris in 1924, inspired by Lautréamont. He traveled extensively across Ecuador, India, China, and Japan, publishing Un barbare en Asie (1933), which André Gide passionately promoted.
In Un certain Plume (1930), he invented an iconic antihero of modern existential helplessness. Beginning in the 1950s, Michaux conducted clinical experiments with mescaline and hallucinogens, producing visionary ink drawings and texts (Misérable miracle) that fascinated Francis Bacon and Octavio Paz.
