Henri Jean Cochet (1901–1987), admired as The Magician, was the most naturally gifted of France's legendary Four Musketeers. Cochet dominated world tennis from 1928 to 1931 as world No. 1, capturing seven Grand Slam singles titles (four French Championships, two Wimbledons, one US Championship).

His revolutionary technique of taking the ball early on the rise right off the turf with lightning half-volleys allowed him to dominate opponents effortlessly without physical exhaustion. He was instrumental in France's six consecutive Davis Cup triumphs from 1927 to 1932.
